The Making of the Worlds Finest Protein Bars
The culmination of in excess of two years of planning and hard work has resulted in the launch of what we believe is the world’s best protein bar. The following will introduce and describe what we is one the most exciting developments since Reflex was founded nearly two decades ago.
One thing that has been missing from the Reflex catalogue for some time is a protein bar and there is a valid reason for its absence, quite simply we have just not been satisfied with the options available to us. Almost all of the protein bars on the shelves today are unfortunately contract manufactured meaning that they are produced at a small number of factories and re-labelled for each brand. Reflex nutrition are understandably apprehensive about using generic bars filled with what we believe to be substandard ingredients and it is a tall order convincing contract packers to move away from these tried, tested and profitable recipes in order to create a nutritionally superior product just for us. With the huge expense of manufacturing equipment and the skilled manpower to operate such equipment, bar factories are often set up to mass produce one product over and over again to ensure reliability and maximum profitability and therefore often the machinery will dictate the recipe making the creation of a brands ultimate protein bar very difficult. Bespoke bar manufacture means wastage and therefore a dip in profitability. It is for this reason that contract manufacturers do not deviate too far from the established recipes you will eat under a variety of guises.
It is for the reasons listed above that Reflex have not had a protein bar in our inventory, given the choice of having a protein bar that’s basically the same as everybody else’s or not having one at all, we chose the latter. Commercially, many in the industry will view a company not having a representative within the fastest growing category in sports nutrition as a fool hardy but the Reflex way is creating quality and not compromising and the inclusion of a generic bar created by a third party would not sit comfortably with anyone at Reflex Nutrition.
With all of the above in mind Reflex Nutrition embarked on an ambitious project to build a state of the art facility capable of producing the finest protein bars available. It is with great pride that we can now say we have such a facility and have finally launched our first offerings in terms of bars.
Our bar is called the “R-Bar” and is a 60 gram bar that delivers 20 grams of protein. We have avoided the use of any artificial colours and preservatives and have chosen stevia as our sweetener. We use ultra-high quality milk proteins sourced exclusively from the EU which ensures that the milk has been sourced from cattle that are absolutely free from elements such as recombinant growth hormone which are widely used and accepted in the US dairy. As with all of our products the R-Bars are completely free from soy protein (Please see this article which will go some way to explaining why we commit to never using soy protein in our products).
R-Bars are a great source of healthy fatty acids as they are packed with freshly ground nut butters. Only the finest nut butters are used with the whole nuts roasted in their skins before being ground into nutritious nut butter with no additional salt, sugar, preservatives, palm oil or flavours. Simply put, we have achieved what we believe to be a ‘game-changing’ product by using nothing but natural flavours, natural sweetener, and real cocoa butter.
Many alternative products on the market are swamped with dextrose, glucose syrups, invert syrups and IMO syrups. We were looking for something healthier. Did you know that the bar you eat with IMO syrup in the EU MUST BY LAW carry a health warning that states that the product is “not suitable for diabetics’? We chose an alternative ingredient that ticks all of our boxes; Soluble Gluco-Fibre. Our gluco-fibre, must be sourced from reputable EU companies, must be backed by scientific data to support the pre-biotic effect, must be non GMO and must come with double blind scientific data to show minimal effect on blood sugar.
We only use EU sourced vegetable glycerine, made from rape seed oil. Glycerin helps the body remain hydrated and has a low glycemic index and leads to a slow increase in blood sugar.
So, the above should give you an idea as to the lengths we have gone to produce an unrivalled bar in terms of ingredient quality. We are confident that the R-Bar is the best in category as we have avoided using ingredients that don’t tick all of our boxes –

A key ingredient that we have AVOIDED is palm oil. If you glance at the ingredient list on other protein bars on the market you will see that the majority contain palm oil, so why have we avoided using it? We have purposely avoided using palm oil based purely on environmental issues. The manufacture of this ingredient is responsible for significant environmental damage caused by deforestation and subsequent damage to the habitat of a variety of flora and fauna. A particularly significant victim of this deforestation is the orang-utan. Dwindling numbers of this wonderful primate are well documented and we are joining the ranks of other to take positive action, saying No to palm oil and adopting 10 Orang-utans from The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation Trust.
